When Experiencing Turbulence in Life, Put Your Own Mask on First

I feel challenged by the limitations placed on our lives by the distancing required to combat the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Being the parent of a child with special needs is not easy, but during this period of social distancing, the difficulties can become magnified.  Even though none of us have been flying on airplanes recently, I have to remind myself of the advice given before every flight.  I have to remember to take care of myself and not just my children.

As Maddy’s mom, I need to remain as flexible as I can in order for my vivacious daughter with Down syndrome’s day to run as smoothly as possible. At the same time, in order for my day to be as successful as possible, I need to be mindful of my own limitations and needs.  Self-care is extremely important during this challenging time.  It is important to give yourself permission to take a break and separate yourself from your child for as long as it takes to get re-energized.  You cannot be the best parent possible if you are not the best self you can be.
