World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated each year on March 21st. The 21st day of the third month of the year was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. In recognition of World Down Syndrome Day, Oak Wealth Advisors’ Director of Special Needs Service, Randi Gillespie, would like to share some thoughts:
An acquaintance recently asked me, “What makes parenting a young adult with Down syndrome different than parenting an adult without a disability?” My answer was simple… “not much.” My expectations remain the same for all three of my children: I want them to be happy, healthy, confident, and independent. My hope is that they find their “one true love,” and careers they enjoy, and they are happy waking up every morning.
I am 19 years into parenting my daughter Maddy, who has Down syndrome. Had I been asked this question years ago, I would have provided a different, less optimistic, response. The difference for me has been education.
I would encourage families to educate themselves while navigating the complexities of the special needs world. This strategy will serve as a critical component of planning for your loved one’s future. I recognize that not every family can afford to hire special needs planning experts, like the team at Oak Wealth Advisors, to serve as a guide on their journey. Knowing this, Oak Wealth Advisors has made it our mission to partner with countless local and national organizations and professional service groups to educate them about special needs financial planning. The webinars and presentations we deliver are 100% focused on education and helping as many families as possible make the best decisions for their loved ones with disabilities.
Through ongoing community education, networking with other like-minded families, and collaborating with the Oak Wealth Advisors team, we hope you find the information and resources you need to help your family sleep better at night and have more fun in your lives.
