October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the incredible individuals who light up our lives with their unique spark.
This year is extra special in our house because my daughter, Maddy, is hitting a major milestone- she’s turning 21! As I reflect on her journey from a tiny, determined toddler to the fierce, funny, and fabulous young woman she is today, I am filled with awe, gratitude, and a whole lot of hope.
To all the families out there navigating the early years of a diagnosis, I see you. Between the endless therapies and doctor visits, early intervention plans, late-night Google spirals, and decoding the medical jargon- the struggle is real. When Maddy was born, those early days felt like a roller coaster with no handlebars. I often felt overwhelmed and had several sheer moments of panic. But here is the good news: you don’t have to navigate the journey by yourself.
Surround yourself with “your people”- your trusted advisors, your community, your friends who show up with coffee and a listening ear. Lean on your child’s school, therapists, and support networks. These people are your co-pilots, and together, will help you build a team that’s stronger than any challenge.
Maddy’s journey has shown me that the path may be winding, but it’s paved with possibility. Every small victory, whether it’s a new word, a mastered skill, or just a day filled with laughter- is a reminder that progress isn’t always linear but it’s worth celebrating. And when things get tough, feel free to channel Maddy’s spirit: laugh at the chaos, keep going, and maybe sneak an extra cookie (or 4), for good measure.
As we gear up to celebrate Maddy’s 21st birthday, I would like to raise a glass to all of you-the families who keep showing up, loving fiercely, and building bright futures for your loved ones. Here’s to Down Syndrome Awareness Month, to milestones big and small and the unstoppable spirit of our loved ones who remind us every day that the light at the end of the tunnel can be absolutely dazzling!
